How to Plan a GAP Tour: A Practical Guide to the Historical Route of Southeast Anatolia

The GAP region refers to the nine provinces included in the Southeastern Anatolia Project; however, when it comes to travel routes, it is usually discussed along the Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Mardin, Diyarbakır, and Adıyaman axis. Stretching from Göbeklitepe's 12,000-year history to Mardin's medieval urban fabric, from Gaziantep's status as home to one of the world's richest culinary heritages to Diyarbakır's basalt walls, this geography offers a cultural diversity that you will not encounter with such intensity in any other region of Türkiye. The difference between visiting with this knowledge and visiting without it means having a completely different experience in the same places.

What Exactly Does the GAP Route Cover?

The five cities that come to mind when referring to a standard GAP tour and their highlights can be listed as follows: the Zeugma Mosaic Museum and bazaar district in Gaziantep; Göbeklitepe, Balıklıgöl, and Harran in Şanlıurfa; the stone streets of the old city, Mor Gabriel Monastery, and Deyrulzafaran in Mardin; the walls and Hevsel Gardens, which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, in Diyarbakır; and Mount Nemrut in Adıyaman. These five centers are located between 90 minutes and 3 hours apart. Some tours use Gaziantep as the southwestern gateway, while others choose Şanlıurfa as the starting point. Depending on your flight option and transfer time, determining your entry point directly affects the itinerary.

When to Go: The Difference Between the Seasons

The climate of Southeastern Anatolia ranges between sharp extremes. In July and August, daytime temperatures exceed 40 degrees in Şanlıurfa and Diyarbakır; in this heat, the flat plain of Harran or the long walks on Mount Nemrut become a real challenge. In January and February, Mount Nemrut is covered in snow, and reaching the summit is often impossible.

The periods of April-May and September-October are the most suitable for the region. In April, the wheat fields are green and the weather is around 18-25 degrees; walking through Mardin's stone streets is much easier in these temperatures. In October, the light is even and golden; for those who want to take photographs, Mardin's south-facing terrace in particular receives its best light between 8 and 9 in the morning during this season. During visits that coincide with Ramadan, the atmosphere of Şanlıurfa's bazaars takes on a different intensity; this is an advantage for those seeking that experience, but a point to consider when planning a routine visit.

How Does Transportation Between the Cities Work?

The backbone of transportation in the GAP region is the road network. The intercity bus network is well developed; Gaziantep to Şanlıurfa takes approximately 2 hours, Şanlıurfa to Mardin takes 2-2.5 hours, and Mardin to Diyarbakır takes 1.5 hours. However, on an itinerary that passes through these cities in a day each and continues onward, bus connections can waste time, because urban transportation and tour sites are generally outside the bus terminals.

Renting a car provides flexibility for independent travelers; however, the narrow streets in Mardin's old city and within Diyarbakır's walls can make parking challenging. For those going to Mount Nemrut, a guided transfer or organized tour via Adıyaman or Kahta is more practical, since the mountain road leading to the summit requires a certain level of driving experience and is dependent on weather conditions. There are regular direct flights from Istanbul and Ankara to the airports of Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, and Diyarbakır; planning in advance which city you will fly into according to your route shortens the total travel time.

How Much Time Should You Allocate to Each City?

Gaziantep is a city centered around museums and bazaars. The Zeugma Mosaic Museum alone requires at least 2 hours; when Bakırcılar Bazaar, Ravanda Castle, and the city's historic commercial inns are added, a lot can be fitted into a single day. Two nights in Gaziantep provide a very comfortable pace.

At least two nights are necessary for Şanlıurfa, because Göbeklitepe alone takes half a day and is 18 kilometers from the city center. Harran village is an additional route of 1-1.5 hours. Balıklıgöl and the bazaar area can be explored on foot in the evening, helping you use your time efficiently.

Mardin, with its compact structure, can be explored well even in a single night; however, two nights are more suitable for those who also want to include Mor Gabriel Monastery and Deyrulzafaran Monastery in their itinerary. In Diyarbakır, one full day is enough for a walk along the walls, Hevsel Gardens, and the Grand Mosque, but if you also add the city's bazaars and inns, a second day will fill up naturally.

Göbeklitepe and Nemrut: What to Know Before Visiting

Göbeklitepe has been welcoming visitors as a partially closed archaeological site since 2018. Since excavations are ongoing, most of the site is under protection and is viewed from designated platforms. Early morning is more favorable in terms of both heat and crowds; especially between April and October, visiting after noon can become tiring. A visit lasts an average of 1-1.5 hours.

Mount Nemrut is located at an elevation of 2,150 meters, and visits at sunrise and sunset are popular. The final 1 kilometer to the summit is covered on foot; however, this last section is a steep and uneven trail. Suitable footwear is essential. Since weather conditions can change rapidly, you need to bring an extra layer of clothing for morning visits; even in midsummer, the summit is cool at sunrise. All these activities depend on weather and road conditions; it is important to confirm current conditions before traveling.

The Food Culture Along the GAP Route Requires Separate Planning

Gaziantep cuisine is one of Türkiye's best-documented and most diverse local cuisines. This variety ranges from lahmacun and katmer breakfasts to pistachio desserts and liver kebab, and you also need to allow time for dining; stopping at a restaurant can easily result in losing an hour. Çiğ köfte and büryan kebab stand out in Şanlıurfa, stuffed ribs and milfiye in Mardin, and kuyu-cooked lamb dishes in Diyarbakır. Breakfast culture is also strong in these cities; sitting down to a local breakfast in each one is a good way to begin understanding the region.

Practical Planning: Duration, Transportation, and Points to Consider

Planning a GAP tour covering all five cities requires at least 6-7 nights. For those traveling for a shorter period, the Gaziantep + Şanlıurfa + Mardin triangle can be completed in 4 nights at a reasonable pace; Mount Nemrut and Diyarbakır can be left for a separate trip in this case.

  • Best seasons: April-May and September-October; the July-August heat makes it difficult to stay outside for long periods.
  • Arriving by air: Direct flights are available from Istanbul and Ankara to the airports of Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, and Diyarbakır; choose the airport closest to your route as your starting point.
  • Choose the early morning hours for a visit to Göbeklitepe; both crowds and temperatures increase in the afternoon.
  • Access to Mount Nemrut depends on weather and road conditions; an organized transfer or guided tour is more reliable from a practical standpoint on this route.
  • The historic areas of Mardin and Diyarbakır are best explored on foot; comfortable, flat-soled shoes are essential.
  • Increase your water intake in summer; carrying enough water is especially important in open areas such as Harran and Göbeklitepe.

What Should You Consider When Deciding?

The most common mistake on the GAP route is trying to visit seven sites in five days by allocating only half a day to each city. This approach is enough to say you have seen the cities, but not enough to understand them. Decide in advance which cities you will visit; reduce the number, but leave more breathing room for each one. If a museum is unavoidable in Gaziantep, Göbeklitepe is unavoidable in Şanlıurfa; Mardin, meanwhile, is rewarding when explored at a pace that allows for slow walks. Clarifying the season, your starting point, and your priority stop before you go makes everything else considerably easier.
